Wilmington YRE Patch

This walk is on sidewalks and is rated 1+. It passes through historical residential areas, along the waterfront, and out to the Cape Fear Museum. It also goes by the Transportation Museum. View the USS North Carolina and visit the many shops and the Old City Market. Look for movies being made along the way.

This YRE walk qualifies for the following Special Programs.

  • American Revolutionary War:
    • Cornelius Harnett: A Revolutionary leader starting with the Stamp Act protests. Harnett replaced William Hooper in the Continental Congress in 1777. When the British occupied Wilmington in 1781, he was captured and imprisoned, an ordeal that led to his death. He is buried in St. James Churchyard at Market and Fourth Streets, and a monument in his honor stands at that intersection.
    • Burgin-Wright House (Cornwallis Headquarters): Third and Market Streets, Now a Museum.
  • Authors and Literary Landmarks:
    • Message in a Bottle: By Nicholas Sparks.
    • Marrow of Tradition: By Charles W. Chesnutt
  • Cemetery Stroll:
    • St. James Churchyard at Market and Fourth Streets.
  • Courthouses in the USA:
    • New Hanover County Courthouse (Cape Fear Visitor Center)
  • College Campus:
    • Cape Fear Community College 411 N. Front Street
  • Railroad Heritage:
    • Wilmington Railroad Museum 501 Nutt Street
  • River Walk America:
    • Cape Fear River
  • US Presidents:
    • George Washington, He stayed at the John Quince house, at Front and Dock street. Stone markers erected in the early 20th Century mark those sites.
    • Woodrow Wilson: The future President Woodrow Wilson lived in Wilmington as a teenager when his father was pastor of First Presbyterian in the 1870s. The gothic stone sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church was built in the 1920s to replace a 19th-century building that had burned at Third and Orange Street.

Directions:
From the west on I-40, when I-40 ends, take the first exit (marked "Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach 17/74"). At the traffic light make a left turn onto Hwy US 17 South (Market Street) and follow Business US 17 to Third Street. Right on Third for one block. Visitors Center is on the right corner of Princess Street.

From the North, take Business US 17 to Third Street and proceed as from the west.

From the South, US 74, US 76, and US 17 North. Cross the Cape Fear River Bridge, turn left at stoplight onto Third Street, cross Market Street and the Visitors Center is on the right.

Parking:
A parking deck for walkers is located 1/2 block past the Visitors Center on the left (minimal fee). On street parking is available with time limit meters. There is some on street (free) parking in the residential area off of Market Street on Fourth and Fifth Streets.
